Modular Bag Strap System Review 2026: What We Compared and How

A modular bag strap system is an interchangeable strap and connector setup that lets one bag switch between crossbody, shoulder, and backpack carry without tools or a second bag. At Strapistry, we built ours around that exact problem: the tote you already love, carried the way you actually need it today. Strapistry designs and finishes every product in this guide, so read it as a buyer's guide to our own lineup, not an independent review.

Our Selection Criteria

We compared every kit on five points: carry styles unlocked, install speed, connection security under load, hardware looks, and expandability.

Strapistry Dual Carry Kit: Crossbody, Shoulder and Backpack From Two Straps

Two straps and four connectors deliver three carry styles for $49. For crossbody or shoulder, two connectors sit on the bag's ends; for backpack mode, you move them to the front and back and clip in both straps.

Watch OutIf you plan to switch between crossbody and backpack carry daily, keep in mind that the Dual Kit's connectors move each time you switch. The Complete Carry Kit adds a third strap and two more connectors for $20 more, so nothing has to move.

Wear Points to Check on Any Modular System

Any strap system has a few parts that take the most wear. Check these from time to time:

  • Strap ends: look for fraying where the webbing meets the clips.
  • Connector screws and buttons: make sure they're still snug. Hand-tighten only.
  • Swivel clips and sliders: check that the clips snap shut fully and the slider holds your length.
  • Your bag's handles and holes: soft or thin anchor points can stretch over time, so watch for any give.

Cost: One Kit vs. More Bags

A kit lets one bag you already own work as a crossbody, shoulder bag, or backpack, which can cost less than buying a separate bag for each carry style.

Repairability and Spare Parts

  • Straps can be bought individually or in bundles, so a single worn strap does not retire the whole system.
  • Connectors are sold in two-packs, which means a stripped screw or a lost connector is a small fix, not a full replacement.
  • Clips and sliders are the moving parts to watch. Check them before a long trip so a loose part doesn't surprise you.
Key TakeawayBuy the Complete Carry Kit for the three carry styles. A $16 connector pack can provide spare connectors.

At $69, the Complete Carry Kit covers all three carry styles, and straps and connectors are sold separately if you ever need spares.

Strap Bundles and Woven Straps: Building a Wardrobe of Looks

Bundles exist to change your bag's look without buying another bag. The Woven Strap is $22 alone, or $48 for three, $60 for four, and $84 for six.

Which Bags Work With Strapistry Connectors

Both connector types are made for bags with handles or holes, including Bogg® Style bags and perforated totes. Strapistry straps use gold-tone swivel clips that connect through handle loops, D-rings, or straight into the holes on perforated totes. If your bag has no handles, loops, or holes, it isn't a good fit.

Third-Party Straps and Other Modular Systems

  • Strapistry woven straps: clip straight onto Strapistry connectors, no adapter needed.
  • Third-party straps with swivel clips: may work with Strapistry connectors, but fit depends on the clip's size. Test the clip before relying on it for a long carry.
  • Straps with sewn-in hardware: straps without clips at the ends won't attach to Strapistry connectors.
  • Other modular systems: Strapistry connectors and straps are designed to work together, and we can't confirm fit with other brands' parts. If you already own another system, buy one Strapistry connector pack first and test it on your existing straps before investing in a full kit.
Pro TipIf you are mixing Strapistry connectors with straps from another brand, order a single $16 connector pack first. It is the cheapest way to check the fit before you commit to a full kit.

Choose Signature Gold when you want the hardware noticed and your bag has solid anchor points. Choose Color Match when you want only the strap seen.

How to Attach a Crossbody Strap to a Tote

Knowing how to attach a crossbody strap to a tote needs no tools, no sewing and no tailor.

  1. Pick your anchor points: the handle loops or the existing holes on your tote.
  2. Thread a connector through the anchor point on one side.
  3. Secure it with the included screw or button, finger-tight only.
  4. Repeat on the opposite side of the bag.
  5. Clip the strap's swivel clips onto both connectors.
  6. Adjust the strap length between 24 and 50 inches until the bag sits at your hip.
  7. Give the bag a gentle tug to confirm both connectors are seated.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a modular bag strap system?

A modular bag strap system is a set of interchangeable straps and connectors that attach to a bag you already own, letting you switch between crossbody, shoulder and backpack carry without buying a new bag. The Strapistry Complete Carry Kit uses two connectors on the bag ends for crossbody or shoulder carry, and four on the front and back for backpack carry. You clip on the strap you want and change styles in seconds with no tools or sewing.

Can I add a crossbody strap to any bag?

Most totes, purses and beach bags work, as long as they have handles or holes the connectors can attach to. Strapistry straps use swivel clips that connect through handle loops, D-rings, or straight into the holes on perforated totes like Bogg® Style bags. Strapistry woven straps are 2 inches wide and adjust from 24 to 50 inches. Bags with no attachment point at all are the main exception.

Are modular straps compatible with leather and canvas bags?

Often, but it depends on the bag. Strapistry connectors need an existing attachment point: handle loops, D-rings, or holes like those on a perforated tote. Many leather purses and canvas totes have handles but no rings or holes, and most plain canvas totes need sewn-on D-ring tabs before a crossbody strap can attach. Check your bag's attachment points before you buy. Choose Signature Gold Connectors (solid brass with a light-gold dip) if you want the hardware to show, or Color Match Connectors (EVA tabs) if you want it to blend into the strap.

How do I choose the right modular strap for my bag?

Start with how you carry. If you only want hands-free crossbody, the Starter Carry Kit at $35 has one strap and two connectors. If you want crossbody, shoulder and backpack from one purchase, the Dual Carry Kit at $49 has two straps and four connectors. The Complete Carry Kit at $69 adds a third strap and two more connectors so all three carries stay set up at once. Match strap color to your bag, then pick Signature Gold or Color Match connectors.

Do modular strap systems damage bag hardware?

The Strapistry system avoids drilling, sewing and adhesive. Connectors attach through handle loops or into holes your bag already has, and the Signature Gold version is solid brass with a light-gold dip finish, secured by a die-cut gold screw. Because nothing is cut or glued, you can remove the connectors and return the bag to its original state. Check that your handle loops or holes fit the connector before installing.
